Solvychegodsk | Сольвычегодск

The sixteenth-century town of Solvychegodsk, three hundred miles east of Liadiny, is a remnant of a once-flourishing culture. The Stroganov merchant dynasty turned its salt refineries into a personal source of great wealth, which in turn supported the building of a series of magnificent churches such as the sixteenth-century Cathedral of the Annunciation, situated on the banks of the Vychegda River. Its interior is decorated with frescoes and a lavish seventeenth-century icon screen, created by the Stroganov workshops. At the end of the seventeenth century, the Stroganovs erected yet another major church, dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. Its elaborate limestone decoration shows increased Western influence, as does its high icon screen.
