NCES 2006348 A Profile of the American High School Senior in 2004: A First Look. Initial Results From the First Follow-up of the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002)
This report presents initial findings from the first follow-up of the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002). ELS:2002 is the fourth major secondary school longitudinal study sponsored by NCES, closely reflecting the research purposes and design of its three predecessor studies, NLS-72, HS&B, and NELS:88. ELS:2002 began with a nationally representative sample of 10th-graders in 2002. In the first follow-up, this sophomore cohort was studied 2 years later (2004), and the sample freshened to provide a representative sample of 12th-graders. This ED TAB report summarizes the demographic and educational characteristics of the high school senior class of 2004. It also reports on the senior cohort’s mathematics achievement, their expectations for eventual educational attainment, the importance to them of various institutional characteristics in choosing a college, and their values and plans.

This report presents findings from the base year of the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002), a new longitudinal study of high school students. The report provides descriptive information about the experiences and characteristics of a nationally representative sample of 10th-graders who were studied in the spring term of the 2001-02 school year. It examines the cohort’s sociodemographic characteristics, school experiences, participation in extracurricular activities, time use, tested achievement in reading and mathematics, and educational expectations and plans.

The Condition of Education summarizes important developments and trends in education using the latest available data. The report, which is required by law, is an indicator report intended for a general audience of readers who are interested in education. The indicators represent a consensus of professional judgment on the most significant national measures of the condition and progress of education for which accurate data are available. The 2002 print edition includes 44 indicators in six main areas: (1) enrollment trends and student characteristics at all levels of the education system from preprimary education to adult learning; (2) student achievement and the longer term, enduring effects of education; (3) student effort and rates of progress through the educational system among different population groups; (4) the quality of elementary and secondary education in terms of courses taken, teacher characteristics, and other factors; (5) the context of postsecondary education; (6) and societal support for learning, including parental and community support for learning, and public and private financial support of education at all levels. This edition also includes special analyses on the environment, climate, and student outcomes at private schools and on the enrollment and persistence of nontraditional undergraduates.

This report presents part of the data collected from two 1999 quick-response surveys: "Vocational Programs in Secondary Schools" and "Occupational Programs in Postsecondary Education Institutions." The surveys were conducted in response to national concern over the gap between existing workforce skills and expanding workplace demands. The summaries in this report focus on the use of skill competency lists in occupational programs, the extent of industry involvement in developing or adopting the competency lists, and the credentialing of skill proficiencies.
