In a special ceremony Tuesday, October 15, David Maurstad, director of FEMA Region VIII, presented Bountiful City Fire Department with an $86,208 grant for fire prevention efforts.

According to Bountiful City Fire Chief George Sumner, the FEMA grant will be used for a community-based public education program designed to purchase and install smoke detectors in Bountiful City. The fire department will visit approximately 12,000 homes in the city to be sure that each has adequate smoke detectors and install them if the home does not.

Bountiful City is one of 24 Utah fire departments that have been awarded grants in the past several weeks as part of FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The program is intended to help rural, urban, and suburban fire departments better protect their communities by improving their equipment and capabilities in a number of key areas.

"We wanted, just once, to be able to go to every home in Bountiful and make sure it was protected," said Chief George Sumner. "This grant is really going to have a significant impact for our community."
