Seattle, WA -- April is Earthquake Awareness Month in Oregon, and this year's theme, "What's Shaking, Oregon?" is a continuation of a state-wide spring earthquake and tsunami awareness campaign which began March 15 and is scheduled to run through May 15. Sponsors include Oregon Emergency Management, Partners for Disaster Resistance: Oregon Showcase State Program, the American Red Cross, Safeco and Partners for Loss Prevention. According to FEMA Regional Director John Pennington, it's a good time to take a break from our workaday routine to reevaluate our disaster preparedness plans and restock emergency kits.

"Calendar observances like Earthquake Awareness Month help us stop 'meaning to' do the right thing, and actually carve out the time to do it," said Pennington. "A current all-hazards disaster preparedness plan and emergency kit that allows for 72-hours of reasonable self-sufficiency in terms of food, water and prescription medication is everyone's responsibility."

Oregon Emergency Management Director Beverlee Venell, concurs. "Mitigation and preparedness is everyone's responsibility, everyday, year-in and year-out: citizens, businesses and local, state and federal government agencies," said Venell. "April events include state-wide 'Drop, Cover and Hold' drills, tsunami evacuation exercises and concerted public awareness messages encouraging non-structural retrofitting of homes and workplaces and updating emergency plans and disaster kits."
