Disaster Recovery Inspectors Visit Flood Damaged Areas: Homeowners And Residents Encouraged To Apply For Assistance Quickly

Anchorage, AK -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is sending contract inspectors to examine damage to dwellings and personal property that resulted from severe winter storms and flooding Oct. 23 through Nov. 12 in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, Kodiak Borough and Chignik Bay area.
Inspectors will visit people who have applied through FEMA's toll free teleregistration number for federal assistance. Inspectors will review the extent of damage to homes and report on losses and damage to personal property.
"You must apply for federal assistance before inspectors can view your damaged property," said Federal Coordinating Officer William Lokey. "One phone call opens the door to the disaster recovery programs that are available to you."
When the FEMA inspector arrives, applicants should be prepared to show proof of ownership and occupancy through copies of bills or other official documents. Residents should be aware that representatives of other agencies may also inspect damaged properties. Other agencies could include the U.S Small Business Administration (SBA) and the American Red Cross.
Residents in affected areas can apply by calling FEMA's toll free registration number: 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The TTY number for the speech or hearing impaired is 1-800-462-7585. Operators are available to take calls from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Alaska Standard Time, seven days a week until further notice.
