Release Date: May 22, 2006
Release Number: R5-06-006

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today released $478,500 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds to the Minnesota Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for a project to benefit the city of Twin Valley, in Norman County, Minn.

“These kinds of projects are the cornerstone of disaster prevention efforts and illustrate the importance of local, state and federal government working together for the benefit of citizens,” said Edward G. Buikema, FEMA Regional Director.

The grant will fund the installation of storm sewers in the southeast portion of the city and a detention basin in the northwest portion of the city. Both actions will increase storm water drainage to reduce flooding in those two areas, which have repetitively flooded over the years. Improvements in these poorly drained areas will directly benefit homes, utilities and roadways in these poorly drained areas by eliminating or significantly reducing future flood damages.

Through HMGP, FEMA will pay 75 percent of the project costs and the city of Twin Valley will contribute the remaining 25 percent. The Minnesota Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management administers the mitigation program.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
