LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- All requests for Public Assistance (Infrastructure) must be received by 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 18th, 2006, officials from the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM) announced today.

Private, non-profit organizations (PNPs) are a group that may not be aware of their potential eligibility. The assistance available to PNP facilities will originate from either the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) or the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Eligible damages must be the result of the storms and tornadoes of April 1st - 3rd which affected Cross, Greene and Randolph counties.

Potential applicants begin the process by contacting the ADEM Public Assistance Officer at 501-221-4034, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. FEMA will then determine if the PNP facility provides a critical governmental service.

PNP facilities providing critical services are eligible to apply for a cost-sharing grant from FEMA's Public Assistance Program. Some examples of PNP facilities in this category are:

PNP facilities providing non-critical services will be automatically referred to the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for consideration of a low-interest disaster loan to cover its property damages.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
