WICHITA, Kan. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that it is expanding assistance to nine Kansas counties to help pay for emergency services and to repair or replace public facilities damaged by the May severe storms, tornadoes and flooding.

Governmental entities, municipal authorities, school districts and certain private nonprofit organizations in Comanche, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Jackson, Lincoln, Osage, Ottawa, Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee counties are now eligible for all categories of Public Assistance.

Public Assistance already had been available in Barton, Edwards, Kiowa, Pratt and Stafford counties.

"We are aware that communities have infrastructure damage caused by the storms and know that we will be working in partnership with the state for a long time," Michael L. Karl, federal coordinating officer, said.

Under the cost-share program, FEMA Public Assistance funds 75 percent of the cost for eligible work by state and local governments and certain nonprofit organizations that provide public services. The state manages the grants for all projects. The remaining 25 percent non-federal share comes from state and local sources.

"We ask officials to attend Applicants' Briefings that will be held in the counties and we will be providing the dates and times in upcoming announcements," Angee Morgan, state coordinating officer, said.

Further information is available through the Kansas Division of Emergency Management Public Assistance Branch.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
