More than $2 Million in Grants/Loans Approved for Victims in First Month

CLOVIS, N.M. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the New Mexico Office of Emergency Management and the U.S. Small Business Administration, Office of Disaster Assistance, have approved more than $2 million in grants and loans in the 30 days since the Presidential disaster declaration was issued.
Federal and state officials are encouraging anyone in Curry and Quay counties who has suffered damage from the recent tornado and severe storms to register for assistance.
"Residents in Curry and Quay counties who suffered any form of damage should register with FEMA. Trained personnel at the FEMA call centers record your registration information and send an inspector to view the damage," said Justin Dombrowski, federal coordinating officer.
The number to call to register is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 only for the hearing and speech impaired. The FEMA registration line is open from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. 7 days a week, until further notice. Registering is the first step in the recovery process.
Following is an update of recovery activities at the close of business Tuesday, May 1, 2007.
- 589 registrations have been received from individuals in Quay and Curry counties.
- 438 registration came from Curry county and 151 from Quay county.
- 685 individuals have visited one of two Disaster Recovery Centers in Clovis and Logan.
- Disaster grants totaling $588,692 under the housing assistance program have been approved.
- Other Needs Assistance grants funded 75% by FEMA and 25% by the state total $158,096
- The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved loans totaling $1,275,300.
- Inspectors have completed 363 home inspections for disaster damage.
FEMA coordinates the federal governments role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
