New York, NY -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the state of New York remind New Yorkers that the final day to register for disaster assistance through the Individual and Family Grant (IFG) program is Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002. Recovery officials also announced that a special Chinese language assistance line has been established to help members of that community during the final week of registration.

Under IFG guidelines for the World Trade Center disaster, residents of the five boroughs of New York City may be eligible for assistance for home repairs, replacement of personal property, or reimbursement for air quality equipment-i.e. air purifiers, air filters, vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters, and repair or replacement of air conditioners.

Applicants should call FEMA's teleregistration line at 1-800-462-9029. Teleregistration hours will operate on the following schedule through the end of application period:

Tue. Nov. 26 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Wed. Nov. 27 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Thur. Nov. 28 Closed for Thanksgiving
Fri. Nov. 29 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Sat. Nov. 30 7 a.m. to 12 midnight (final day of registration)

It is recommended that IFG program applicants call between the hours of 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., hours when the FEMA teleregistration lines are dedicated exclusively to New York IFG calls.

In addition to calling the regular teleregistration number, Chinese-speaking applicants may also call a new toll-free assistance line during the final week of registration: 1-888-410-2655. The service was added due to recent large increases in call volume from the Chinese community. While the volume of applicants speaking English, Spanish and other languages has also increased, FEMA's arrangement with the AT&T Language Line, which provides translation services, has accommodated these calls.

The automated Chinese language line is operational 24 hours a day, including Thanksgiving Day, until 12 midnight on Sat. Nov. 30. Callers will be asked to leave their name, telephone number and the best time for a return call from FEMA, at which time they can register over the phone with a FEMA representative. All calls to the new Chinese language assistance number must be received by 12 midnight on Saturday, Nov. 30.
