Statement From FEMA Director Joe M. Allbaugh On The Newly Established Department Of Homeland Security

Release Date: November 19, 2002
Release Number: HQ-02-224

"I applaud Congress's broad, bipartisan support of the President's Department of Homeland Security proposal. The passage of this bill brings together the nation's homeland security resources and makes America safer. As a long-time advocate for this type of reorganization, I am absolutely convinced that this move is in the best interest of the American people, who deserve the strongest homeland defense their government can give them.

"Our current system of piece-meal preparedness will not protect America, her people, or her infrastructure. Under the DHS, we will finally have a strong network of programs, policies, and people devoted to the vital mission of homeland preparation and defense. FEMA is ready to work with the new Secretary on the transition, move into the new Department and continue our work preparing and protecting the American people."
