Edmond, OK -- Joe M. Allbaugh, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that the Edmond Fire Department will receive a $107,737 grant from FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program to fund professional training, emergency medical services enhancements and the development of a hazardous materials response unit in the Edmond Fire Department.

"The nation's fire fighters are among the first responders to almost every emergency," said FEMA Director Joe Allbaugh. "Our grant to the Edmond Fire Department will make firefighters better prepared and safer and the department will be better equipped to respond to fires, hazmat incidents and other emergencies."

Chief Gil Harryman said, "The FEMA grant will help us expand the services we provide to Edmond residents as well as to neighboring fire departments. We are also building on last year's fire grant. "

In 2001, FEMA awarded the Edmond Fire Department nearly $50,000 to equip a Heavy Rescue and Collapsed Building Response Team.

About 5,500 fire departments will receive awards before the end of the calendar year as part of the $360 million Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program. The program makes awards in four functional areas: firefighting operations and safety; fire prevention; emergency medical services; firefighting vehicle acquisition. So far in 2002, 85 Oklahoma fire departments have received nearly $3.6 million in fire grants.

A list of all current award recipients announced to date is posted on the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) web site at www.usfa.fema.gov/grants. The USFA is part of FEMA. Future grant recipients will be listed as awards are made.
