New York, NY -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the state of New York are advising New Yorkers that one week remains to register for disaster assistance through the Individual and Family Grant (IFG) program. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, is the last day to register for the IFG program, which is designed to help residents from federally declared disaster areas cover the costs of disaster-related necessary expenses or serious needs not covered by insurance or other assistance programs.

Under IFG guidelines for the World Trade Center disaster, residents of the five boroughs of New York City may be eligible for assistance for home repairs, replacement of personal property, or reimbursement for air quality equipment-i.e. air purifiers, air filters, vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters, and repair or replacement of air conditioners.

Applicants should call FEMA's teleregistration line at 1-800-462-9029. Teleregistration hours will operate on the following schedule through the end of application period:

Sat. Nov. 23 -- 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Sun. Nov. 24 -- Closed
Mon. Nov. 25 -- 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Tue. Nov. 26 -- 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Wed. Nov. 27 -- 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Thur. Nov. 28 -- Closed for Thanksgiving
Fri. Nov. 29 -- 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Sat. Nov. 30 -- 7 a.m. to 12 midnight (final day of registration)

It is recommended that IFG program applicants call between the hours of 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., hours when the FEMA teleregistration lines are dedicated exclusively to calls from New York IFG applicants. Hearing or speech-impaired individuals may call the TTY registration number at 1-800-462-7585.
