Disaster Registration Line Closes For Holiday

Baton Rouge, LA -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free registration line, 800-621-FEMA, will shut down Wed. Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. (CST) for Thanksgiving and reopen Fri., Nov.29 at 8 a.m. according to recovery officials. The line for speech or hearing-impaired residents (TTY/TDD) 800-462-7585 will also be closed for the holiday.
After the holiday closure, registration lines will return to their normal operating hours from
8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon. through Sat.
Registration is the only way to receive federal-state disaster assistance. By law, the application period closes 60 days after the President issues a major disaster declaration.
State Coordinating Officer Art Jones said the deadline for Louisiana residents to apply for disaster assistance for damages or losses caused by Tropical Storm Isidore or Hurricane Lili is close-of-business, 6 p.m., Mon., Dec.2.
"This is a busy time of year but no one should be too busy to apply for unmet needs," Jones said. He urged any residents with uninsured losses to register in the few remaining days before applications would cease to be accepted.
Residents in 39 parishes may apply for FEMA and state recovery aid including grants for emergency disaster housing and essential repairs, individual and family grants for necessities not covered by insurance or other sources and low-interest loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
