Disaster Recovery Centers To Be Open Thanksgiving; Closing Soon But Helpline Will Still Be Available

Birmingham, AL -- Disaster Recovery Centers operated by the Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Abbeville and Centre will be open to help tornado victims on Thanksgiving Day and permanently closed at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30.
The third recovery center, located in the Manchester Community Center at 4625 Hwy. 195, Jasper, will also be open on Thanksgiving Day. It will be permanently closed at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Dec.3.
Until their final closing dates, the three centers, which were opened to help assist victims of recent tornadoes who had already applied for disaster assistance, will operate 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. FEMA and AEMA experts are stationed at each center where they can help Alabamians in 29 counties recently declared as disaster areas by President Bush following storms and tornadoes Nov. 5-12.
After the centers close, storm victims will still be able to receive assistance by calling the FEMA-State Helpline, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).
The 29 counties are: Barbour, Bibb, Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Cullman, Dale, DeKalb, Etowah, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Hale, Henry, Houston, Jefferson, Lamar, Lawrence, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, Pickens, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston.
