SNOQUALMIE, Wash. -- City of Snoqualmie Mayor R. Fuzzy Fletcher has announced November 2000 as "Flood Awareness Month." Observances will include a "kick off event" on Thursday, November 9 at 3:30 p.m. at the Snoqualmie City Hall (38767 SE River Street, Snoqualmie), tours of elevated housing, and Flood Awareness Workshops from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Carl Cook, FEMA Mitigation Director for Region 10 (a federal jurisdiction spanning Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington state) applauds the City of Snoqualmie's focus on pre-disaster mitigation, and recommends their proactive approach to all local government administrations. "Snoqualmie took lessons learned during this last decade's flood seasons to heart," said Cook. They've worked closely with citizen groups and private homeowners, identifying high risk flood sites, sponsoring buy-out programs to remove frequently flooded structures, rezone those areas as open spaces, and elevate homes in high flood hazard areas."
