BETHANY BEACH, Del. -- The Town of Bethany Beach, the State of Delaware, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and local corporate and nonprofit partners today signed an agreement to create a disaster resistant community under the nationwide initiative called Project Impact. In a beachfront, sunny setting, about 50 people witnessed the signings and heard local officials recount the Nor'easters that have hit the community over the years. Marty Frengs, Region III mitigation, urged the community to prepare and "not become one of the many communities who suffer storms and take months and years to recover."
The document outlines activities to be taken by each party to reduce the community's vulnerability to disaster. It also establishes the Bethany Beach Project Impact partnership, which can expand to accommodate as many groups and businesses that want to participate.
The Town of Bethany Beach was named a Project Impact site in 1999. Lewes, Milford and the newly-named Wilmington are the state's other Project Impact communities.
