Region III Communities Shine in Project Impact Summit Awards Competition

FEMA Director James Lee Witt joins Boy Scouts from Troop 911 in Milford, Delaware, at the Project Impact Summit held  in Washington, DC in November 2000.  The scouts earned the first Project Impact merit badges in a program developed with FEMA Region III mitigation staff.

Washington, DC -- The Project Impact communities in Region III did very well in the annual awards competition. The awards were announced at the Project Impact Summit held November 13-17 in Washington, DC. Of the 19 National awards, Region III communities won four. The Lewes, DE community's William Boylen, Manager of Quality Roofing, won the Outstanding Local Businessperson award. The Tri-Counties, MD community's Laura Wright, of Comcast Cable Communications won the Outstanding Media Organization award. Allegany County, MD won the Livability and Environmental award and Cabell County, WV won the Livability and Economic Development award.

In addition, four Region III communities won large challenge grants from the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI.). They are Tucker/Randolph, WV, Milford, DE, Virginia Beach, VA and the Tri-Counties, MD.

Of the twenty-one Region III communities, twenty were able to send representatives to the Summit.
