Honolulu, HI -- The Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Hilo will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2000. The center is staffed with federal, state and voluntary agency workers who provide information and answer questions about a wide range of disaster assistance.

After Thanksgiving, the DRC will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The DRC will be closed on Sundays.

Federal Coordinating Officer William L. Carwile III and State Coordinating Officer Ed Teixeira are urging those affected by the severe storms and flooding to take advantage of the help that is available at the center.

Big Island residents who were affected by the storms and flooding should register for assistance, prior to visiting the DRC, by calling FEMA's toll-free Teleregistration number at 1-800-462-9029. People with hearing or speech impairments may call TTY: 1-800-462-7585. "Calling the Teleregistration number is a fast and easy way to apply," Carwile said.

Disaster victims also can get information about disaster assistance programs, or the status of their applications for assistance by calling the Disaster Information Helpline at 1-800-525-0321. The Helpline operates from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. Persons who are hearing- or speech-impaired can call TTY 1-800-462-7585.
