Honolulu, HI -- A Disaster Information Helpline has been established for those who were affected by the recent severe storms and flooding and need information about assistance programs or the status of their FEMA application for aid. The toll-free number is 1-800-525-0321. People with hearing or speech impairments may call the TTY Helpline at 1-800-462-7585.
Both numbers are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.
Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State Civil Defense (SCD) are encouraging anyone with questions about disaster assistance recovery programs to call the Helpline toll-free at 1-800-525-0321 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585).
"Flood victims can learn about housing programs and grants by calling this number," Federal Coordinating Officer William L. Carwile III said.
President Clinton signed a major disaster declaration on November 9, 2000 for Hawaii county making it eligible for federal disaster assistance due to severe storms and flooding which took place between October 28 and November 2.
Renters, homeowners and business owners affected by the storms and flooding on the Big Island may apply for assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free Teleregistration number at 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585). The Teleregistration numbers, as well as the Helpline numbers are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.
