HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Disaster recovery grants and disaster loans totaling more than $101 million has been approved for Pennsylvania individuals and business owners who suffered losses as a result of flooding from September tropical storms Frances, Ivan and Jeanne, according to figures from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). As of Dec. 9:
- 37,358 Pennsylvanians have registered for assistance
- More than $73.8 million has been approved for Individual and Household grants
- Over $27.8 million has been approved for loans from the Small Business Administration (SBA)
Residents and business owners in the 56 counties who sustained damage because of flooding between Sept. 17 and Oct. 1 have one week left to register for disaster assistance. Dec. 18 is the deadline. Anyone who suffered damage and has not yet registered is urged to call 1-800-621-3362 (TTY 800-462-7587) or register on-line at www.fema.gov.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
