CHARLESTON, W. VA. -- The Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Wheeling, WV (56 16th Street) will close on Friday, December 10, 2004 at 5 P.M. Until that time, the center’s normal hours of operation will continue. The hours are from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M., Monday to Friday.
Lou Botta, federal coordinating officer for The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently commented, “FEMA opened the Wheeling DRC on September the 25th in the old social security building. Face to face meetings with staff helped local flood applicants move more quickly through the process”.
The total amount of federal assistance provided to individuals and households in West Virginia, due to Hurricane Ivan flooding, is nearing $17 million. “Ohio County received almost six million of that total,” said Steve Kappa, state coordinating officer, “and the DRC in Wheeling was the most heavily used, receiving over 2700 visits during it’s eleven weeks of operation.”

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
