ATLANTA, Ga. -- State and federal disaster recovery officials announced today that five Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) have opened to serve victims of Hurricane Ivan. Representatives from local, state and federal agencies, the American Red Cross, as well as loan officers from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), will be on hand to answer questions and provide recovery information.

State agencies slated to be on site include: Georgia Emergency Management Agency, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia Department of Human Resources’ Divisions of Mental Health and Public Health and Department of Family and Children Services and legal services provided by the Georgia Bar Association.

After calling the toll-free application number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585, disaster victims may visit the center to meet face-to-face with recovery specialists.

DRCs are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through the close of business on Monday, September 27.

People who have suffered damage to their home, apartment or business property in the declared counties of Carroll, Cherokee, Cobb, Dawson, DeKalb, Early, Franklin, Fulton, Gilmer, Madison, Rabun, Towns, Union and White are urged to call and apply for assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The special number for those with hearing or speech impairment is TTY 1-800-462-7585.

After individuals have applied by phone, they may visit the centers with any questions or to receive more specific information on federal and state recovery programs. For more information on FEMA disaster programs, visit the agency’s Web site at www.fema.gov.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
