BILOXI , Miss. -- Community relations workers from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are distributing hurricane evacuation information door hangers to residents of FEMA travel trailers and mobile homes along the Gulf Coast.

The door hangers tell residents to call a toll-free number, 1-866-647-0966 or TTY 1-228-385-5769 for the speech- or hearing-impaired, by May 26 if they will need transportation in the event of an evacuation due to a hurricane.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will provide information from the calls to local officials so they will know how many residents will need help with transportation in a hurricane evacuation. The door hangers and toll-free phone lines are part of Gov. Haley Barbour's eight-week Stay Alert. Stay Alive. hurricane awareness campaign. The 2006 hurricane season starts June 1.

The door hangers, which are printed in English, Spanish and Vietnamese, are being distributed in Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, George, Stone and Pearl River counties.

"The door hangers have useful information for anyone who has special transportation needs," said Jesse Munoz, acting director of the transitional recovery office for Mississippi 's Hurricane Katrina recovery. "They also provide useful tips on what to do in the event of an evacuation."

In an evacuation, Mississippi residents living in FEMA travel trailers need to turn off appliances, lock their doors and leave the trailers behind.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003
