Recovery Opinions Sought During Jackson County Public Meetings

BILOXI , Miss. -- Jackson County 's Hurricane Katrina recovery will be highlighted at two public meetings in late April where residents can learn about potential long-term community projects and voice their opinions about proposed rebuilding plans.
Jackson County meetings are set for April 24 at the Vancleave High School gymnasium on Highway 57 in Vancleave and April 27 at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Highway 90 in Gautier. Jackson County residents can come anytime between 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
The open house meetings are a collaboration of the Mississippi Governor's Office of Recovery and Renewal and the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
In order for rebuilding efforts to move forward in the best possible way, we need to have the input of as many Mississippians as possible, said Robert Latham, director of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).
Staff from the Governor's Office of Recovery and Renewal, FEMA and local governments are working together to identify potential key rebuilding projects for housing, economic development and public infrastructure. Community response to these ideas will be incorporated into the decisions about which projects get the green light.
FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
