BILOXI, Miss. -- Monday is the deadline for new applications for disaster assistance for Mississippi residents and business owners who sustained damages due to Hurricane Katrina.

Mississippians in the 49 disaster-declared counties have less than four days to apply for disaster assistance from the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Cases of individuals and households who have already applied will continue to be processed after the deadline.

Those who have not applied are urged to do so by calling the toll-free FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired. Both numbers are operational seven days a week, from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central Daylight Time. Families also can apply online by accessing the FEMA Web site at www.fema.gov and clicking the ‘Apply for Assistance’ box in the center of the page.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
