Disaster Assistance in Cuero and Victoria Tops $6 Million; Applications for Assistance Nearly 3,000 in DeWitt and Victoria Counties

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- As of Nov. 24, state and federal officials have approved more than $6 million in disaster assistance funds to help residents of Cuero and Victoria who have applied for help following the Oct. 17-31 floods in south and central Texas.
Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (DEM) today released the following figures on the status of disaster recovery assistance in Cuero and Victoria, and the counties of DeWitt and Victoria.
- Disaster Housing including rental assistance (not including mobile homes or travel trailers) for the cities of:
Eligible Total Approved Cuero 740 $2,184,708 Victoria 552 $1,230,899 - Small Business Administration (SBA) loans - approved for homeowners, renters and businesses listed by county:
Eligible Applicants Total Approved DeWitt 19 $ 881,800 Victoria 3 $ 130,900 - Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) - Individuals may visit the DRC in Victoria, located at 2704 N. Laurent (Village Shopping Center), or the one in Cuero, located at Municipal Park Clubhouse, Highway 87 (across the highway from Wal-Mart), after they have registered for assistance. These centers give flood victims the opportunity to speak face-to-face with recovery specialists about disaster assistance and ask questions about their application.
DRC activity in the cities of:Visits Cuero 2,387 Victoria 1,716 - County Registrations - Individuals who have called FEMA's toll-free number at 1-800-462-9029 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585) to register for federal and state aid, including housing assistance, disaster unemployment assistance, low-interest loans, income tax and social security assistance, veterans' assistance, serious needs and necessary expenses, and flood insurance information.

Individuals who suffered losses during the flood are urged to call FEMA's teleregistration at 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585) to apply for disaster assistance. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The deadline for applying is Dec. 21, 1998.
