Displaced Flood Victims Urged to Contact FEMA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Displaced flood victims who are unable to locate suitable temporary housing are urged to contact the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for help.
"There are two ways to reach us for temporary housing assistance," said Federal Coordinating Officer Robert E. Hendrix of FEMA. "One way is to call the toll-free Helpline and the other is to go to a Disaster Recovery Center."
The Helpline, 1-800-525-0321 (1-800-660-8005 for speech- or hearing-impaired individuals), is answered from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Disaster Recovery Centers also are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
"Our first step in helping families find temporary housing is to match them with existing rental property in a community," Hendrix said. "If there are no such properties, we will look at other options such as travel trailers and mobile homes. But before we can do that, we have to know what the need is. That's why it's so important that people let us know if they are having trouble finding a suitable place to live."
Federal and state disaster-recovery specialists have compiled lists of available housing in each of the declared counties and can help match a family with an appropriate living unit. This service is for individuals who have already applied for assistance by calling the registration number, 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585) between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The deadline to apply is Monday, Dec. 21. Assistance is available in your preferred language.
