TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- FEMA/state aid to residents and business owners who suffered damages in Hurricane Georges and Tropical Storm Mitch have exceeded $74 million, Deputy Federal Coordinator Pat Seaman of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said today.
More than $71 million has been approved to date for damages in Monroe and the 16 Florida Panhandle counties included in the Georges declaration. More than $2.8 million has been approved for tornado and flood damages in Monroe and Palm Beach counties included in the Mitch declaration.
Following is a breakdown of funds approved for Georges damages:
- Temporary housing and minimal home repairs, $8.5 million.
- Individual and family grants for emergency expenses, $4.5 million.
- Disaster unemployment assistance, $385,207.
- Crisis counseling for Monroe County, $70,000
- Public assistance for such things as debris removal, emergency services, road and bridge repair, public buildings and utilities, $19.3 million.
- U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans, $38.2 million.
Funds approved for Mitch damages include the following:
- Temporary housing, $575,514
- Individual and family grants, $161,102.
- Disaster unemployment assistance, $1,500.
- Public assistance, $865,405.
- SBA loans, $1.2 million.
The application period for Georges has ended but those with damages suffered during Mitch have until Jan. 4, 1999, to apply for aid. The toll-free FEMA registration number is 1-800-462-9029, or 1-800-462-7585 for those with speech or hearing impairments.
