Raleigh, NC -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced a grant of $8.8 million to the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus to replace its physical education building that was virtually destroyed by a tornado on November 10, 2002. FEMA will also help repair the fine arts building that was severely damaged by that same twister.

"This historic university has been an important part of the state's education system for generations," said FEMA Director Joe M. Allbaugh. "We're proud to help repair these buildings so they will be available to help educate future generations."

Replacement cost for the physical education building is estimated at $11,805,440. FEMA will reimburse the state of Mississippi 75 percent of that cost, or $8,854,080. The top floor of the Fine Arts Building was destroyed and the lower floors sustained water damage. Repair costs are estimated at $1,487,938, with FEMA reimbursing the state 75 percent of the costs ($1,115,953).
