Live Oak County To Buy Flood-Ravaged Homes

Release Date: January 16, 2003
Release Number: HMGP01

Denton, TX -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said today it has obligated approximately $1.4 million to the State of Texas to buy 32 severely damaged homes in Live Oak County. Forty-one counties were declared a federal disaster area when homes flooded in July 2002.

"Acquisition of repetitively flooded homes is an important mitigation tool for reducing future disaster costs," said FEMA Director Joe M. Allbaugh. "This project, along with mitigation plans and building standards, will make Live Oak County a safer community." The County will purchase the flood-damaged property, demolish all improvements, and remove all debris. The property will then be allowed to return to its natural state as part of the flood plain.

FEMA provides 75 percent of the projects' nearly $1.8 million cost ($1,326,000) through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program and the remaining 25 percent comes from local resources.
