» More Information on North Carolina Hurricane Floyd & Irene
RALEIGH, N.C. -- During the week when the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) extended for another 30 days the period in which victims of Hurricanes Floyd and Irene might apply for recovery assistance, the amount paid from federal/state programs for the transition back to normalcy has reached $936.9 million.
"This will be well over a billion dollar disaster before we've finished here," said Carlos Mitchell, federal coordinating officer. "The people of North Carolina have suffered mightily as a result of the 1999 hurricanes and floods."
Disaster housing assistance and individual and family grants totaled $143.7 million by the end of the week. U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loans for homes and businesses continued to pace the government outlays with $388 million.
Cumulative payouts by program areas are as follows:
Persons living in the 66 North Carolina counties declared a disaster area by the President as a result of the 1999 floods now have until February 17 to apply for assistance.
