OWENSBORO, Ky. -- A special toll-free telephone number is in operation for individuals, families and businesses affected by the tornado and flash flooding that ravaged parts of Crittenden, Daviess, Hopkins and Webster Counties last week.
The number is 1-800-462-9029, according to W.R. Padgett, the Kentucky Department of Emergency Management official who is coordinating state response in the disaster area. A toll-free TTY number, 1-800-462-7585, is available to persons who have hearing or speech impairments, he said.
Padgett and Federal Coordinating Officer Scott Wells, Padgett's federal counterpart from FEMA pointed out that victims of the storm must register by phone in order to receive assistance.
The presidential declaration designating the counties a major disaster area opens the way for emergency assistance to individuals and families, including both renters and homeowners, and businesses that suffered losses in the tornadoes, severe storms, torrential rains and flash flooding of January 3-4.
The first disaster checks for the area are already in the mail, according to state and federal officials who are coordinating disaster response and recovery. As of January 15, 22 applicants for disaster emergency housing should receive a total of $19,140.52 when the checks arrive.
To date, 483 applications have been made for disaster aid for all types. Of that figure, 202 have sought temporary housing assistance.
