Assessments Underway in Kentucky for Severe Weather Damage

Washington, DC -- At the request of state officials, six Preliminary Damage Assessment teams from FEMA's regional office in Atlanta (Region IV) have deployed to Owensboro (Daviess County), Kentucky, to assist with detailed damage assessments.

A severe weather system that included tornadoes and high winds hit the state on January 3. The damage assessment teams will be in both in Crittenden and Daviess counties.

Current estimates in Owensboro indicate that a tornado destroyed 111 homes. Approximately 257 homes sustained major damage from the storms, while 534 suffered minor damage. According to initial surveys, public utilities and roads in the area also suffered substantial damage.

State officials report 59 National Guard personnel are helping with the recovery efforts in northwest Kentucky.
