New Castle, DE -- Families and individuals who suffered damage from tropical storm Henri and Hurricane Isabel are receiving assistance from state, federal, local and voluntary agencies. These agencies are working in partnership to help Delaware residents.
Recovery services summary as of 7:00 a.m., Friday, October 10, 2003:
- 527 applications have been received through the FEMA toll free registration number 800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY: 800-462-7585
- 94 percent of damage inspections issued have been completed.
- $764,102.64 from the Individuals and Households Program has been disbursed to the victims.
- $182,900 In Small Business Administration (SBA) loans has been approved.
- 72 SBA loan applications received.
- The Disaster Unemployment Assistance program (DUA) is available to residents living or working in New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties who are unable to work due to damage incurred by Hurricane Isabel. Applications are due no later than October 22, 2003.
- The Disaster Unemployment Assistance program (DUA) is available to residents living or working in New Castle County who are unable to work due to damage incurred by tropical storm Henri. Applications are due no later than October 25, 2003.
- 456 people have visited the Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) including one that was initially opened in Sussex County. The New Castle County DRC remains open and is located near Wilmington. The DRC is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. until further notice at the St. Marks United Methodist Church.
- 7,700 meals and snacks have been served by the coordinated efforts of the American Red Cross and the St. Marks United Methodist Church Hospitality Council.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
