Harrisburg, PA -- Residents and business owners with losses or damage as a result of the Labor Day week storms in Lackawanna County have only two more days to visit the FEMA/state Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Mayfield, officials announced. The center will close permanently on Thursday, Oct. 9

The DRC, located in the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Center (the old Vo-Tec building) at 1300 Old Plank Road in Mayfield, will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Thursday, Oct. 9.

Before visiting the center, disaster victims should register for assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free registration line. Lackawanna County residents who have losses from the Labor Day week storms, and have not yet registered, should do so by calling 1-800-621-3362 or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired. The lines are open from 7 a.m. to midnight seven days a week, until further notice.

Although the center closes on Oct. 9, help will still be available by calling the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362 (TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired). The lines are open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
