More Than $19 Million Approved in Disaster Assistance for South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Six weeks since a presidential disaster declaration was signed for South Dakota on May 22, more than $19 million in grants, low-interest disaster loans, and state disaster assistance has been approved to assist residents who suffered damages from severe storms, floods, and tornados, according to disaster recovery officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the South Dakota Office of Emergency Management.
Federal, state, local and voluntary agencies are working in partnership to help South Dakotans throughout the disaster recovery process. The following is an update of their activities:

4650 individuals from the 11 disaster-declared counties have applied for federal disaster assistance.

$5.6 million has been approved for repairing disaster-damaged, uninsured or underinsured homes to a safe, sanitary and functional condition.

$478,000 has been approved for Other Needs Assistance, which may include grants for medical, personal property, transportation and other eligible expenses.

$684,000 in state disaster assistance for food, clothing, and medical supplies has been allocated.

664 applications for U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest home and business disaster loans have been approved, totaling $13 million.

5575 total visits have been made to the Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) throughout the affected areas.

4200 housing inspections to verify applicant losses have been completed, with most inspections being completed within three days of initial registration.

11 Public Assistance projects totaling more than $186,000 have been approved thus far to reimburse state, local and public sector agencies for disaster-related costs.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
