Disaster Applicants Now Approved for $550,000+ In FEMA, State Grants

WINDSOR, Conn. -- In the first week since the declaration, more than $550,000 in grants for housing-related and personal property losses are now on their way to Connecticut residents qualified to receive disaster declaration authorized funds to aid individuals and households, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announces today. Most of the assistance is for grants to residents needing to make emergency repairs to damaged residences so they are safe, sanitary and secure.

More than $530,000 is earmarked for housing assistance, including repairs, and another $20,000 is on its way to help applicants with other critical storm-related losses such as clothing, transportation, medical equipment and tools of trade.

"We are pleased to provide assistance to those Connecticut residents that have been impacted by the Nor’easter," said Federal Coordinating Officer Mike Parker. "We encourage people to call our Help Line to register for assistance and to visit the Disaster Assistance Centers in their areas to seek further guidance as needed."

"This is good news for Connecticut residents, and we appreciate FEMA’s quick response," Governor M. Jodi Rell said. "Federal government officials are working here in the state to help those who need it, and I urge people to continue to contact FEMA with any questions or concerns."

More than 650 applications are on their way to individuals and businesses who may qualify for U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest disaster loans. To date, 578 applications are for individuals and 78 to business in need of repairs, replacement of inventory losses and economic injury.

To date, 656 persons or households have registered with FEMA for assistance.

To apply for FEMA assistance for April storm losses, please call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Persons with speech or hearing impairment may call TTY 1-800-462-7585. An application may also be filed using the internet at www.fema.gov, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
