San Juan County Unites With Industry, FEMA and Local Officials To Protect Community Against Hazardous Chemical Accidents

DENTON, Texas -- Is San Juan County ready for a chemical spill? We are about to find out. FEMA and San Juan County are preparing for a hazardous material incident exercise.
Local officials have spent months refining and developing the community's emergency response procedures. Fire, law enforcement, medical staff and local industries will jointly test the local emergency management plan in a four-hour exercise on Saturday, July 22 at 8:00 a.m. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region VI will direct the evaluation of the San Juan County emergency response plans for responding to a hazardous materials incident.
The evaluation will use a national program developed by FEMA Region VI called Comprehensive Hazmat Emergency Response - Capability Assessment Program (CHER-CAP).
The exercise players are from city, county and state governments, private business, volunteer organizations and FEMA. They include fire, law enforcement, medical staff and local industries (see the attached industry listing).
Peer evaluators will assist in the exercise by evaluating the players' activities. Volunteers from across the county will serve as the mock victims and evacuees. The public is welcome to observe the exercise at 500 County Road 6100, Kirtland, New Mexico.
