Moorhead, MN -- Disaster recovery officials urge individuals and business owners affected by recent severe storms and flooding to apply for assistance by calling the FEMA toll-free number - 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585). State and federal officials announced today that phone lines will be open tomorrow, on the July 4th holiday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will continue to operate between those hours, seven days a week, until further notice.

Disaster assistance was made available to residents of Becker, Clay, Mahnomen and Norman counties and the White Earth Reservation by amendment to President Clinton's declaration of June 23. That assistance includes: temporary housing assistance; coverage of minimal repairs to damaged homes and businesses; individual grants to assist with serious disaster-related needs; unemployment insurance and U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest loans to homeowners, business owners and renters.

"Your call to FEMA's toll-free number is the first step in applying for disaster assistance. Interviewers will ask for information on the location of your property and the damages sustained, any pertinent insurance coverage and your location, phone number and social security number. The entire call usually will take no more than 15 minutes," FEMA Coordinating Officer Theodore Monette said.
