BILOXI, Miss. -- Although the 2006 hurricane season officially ended last week, Mississippi families remain vigilant in their preparedness for future disasters and the work of recovery continues unabated. 

In partnership with the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated more than $9.4 billion in disaster aid to Mississippi as of Dec. 1, 2006.

A network of other federal, state, local and volunteer agencies also are helping thousands of Mississippians as they rebuild their homes, businesses and communities. 

Approximately $1.1 billion has been approved in the following Public Assistance (PA) categories (not including debris removal). To date, more than $908 million has been disbursed to PA applicants for rebuilding projects including bridges, public buildings and utilities. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency administers the funds. The $1.1 billion approved for PA includes:

Approximately $1.3 billion to individuals and families:

More than $1.3 billion has been approved for debris removal including nearly $222 million for marine debris and $790 million for land-based debris.

Other assistance:

In addition, more than $2.6 billion in U.S. Small Business Administration loans have been approved for Mississippians.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with state and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and other first responders. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
