SANTA FE, N.M. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently approved several Public Assistance projects totaling $457,945.66 for Hatch, NM. The projects include funds for roads and bridge repair, building repairs, and reimbursement for emergency services provided by the Village of Hatch in the aftermath of this summer's severe storm and flooding. The State of New Mexico released the funds earlier this week for eligible damage in Hatch.
"Hatch is the first recipient of obligated funds. Funds will continue to flow from FEMA through the state to local jurisdictions. Our partnership with FEMA will continue to provide Public Assistance funding to communities throughout New Mexico ," said Director, Office of Emergency Management, Tim Manning.
The Public Assistance Program provides funds to eligible municipalities, public agencies, qualified private non-profit organizations and federally recognized Indian tribes or authorized tribal organizations for approved costs of debris removal, emergency protective measures, and road repairs. Repair of water control facilities and restoration of buildings, utilities, and recreational facilities can also be considered eligible costs. After an inspection of damages, FEMA obligates funds to the state, and the state in turn disburses the funds to the applicant. FEMA provides 75% of the funds while the State of New Mexico will contribute 18% with the applicant responsible for covering the remaining 7% of the cost.
FEMA and the State of New Mexico will continue to provide Public Assistance funds to communities throughout the State as projects are reviewed and approved. Funding is provided to eligible applicants based on eligible costs and FEMA guidelines.
FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with state and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and other first responders. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
