Tornadoes Hit Texas

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Local officials report a tornado hit Midland, Texas on April 13 destroyed approximately 40 homes and damaged another 60. Most of these units are mobile homes. The city was completely without power for a time but all service has since been restored.

Another tornado yesterday struck a shopping mall in the City of Conroe in Montgomery County. There have been no reported deaths from these incidents and four confirmed related injuries.

Texas authorities established an Incident Command team in Midland. The American Red Cross opened a shelter, but motels in affected areas are also opening their doors to tornado victims.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TX-DEM) has assembled a preliminary damage assessment team that is ready to deploy to affected areas. FEMA's regional office in Denton, Texas (Region VI) remains in contact with TX-DEM and is closely monitoring the situation.
