Severe Weather Update

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The National Weather Service (NWS) reports the threat of severe weather is moving to the east today. NWS forecasters issued a tornado watch today for parts of eastern Alabama and central Georgia into the afternoon.

A severe weather threat exists for Georgia, northern Florida and the Carolinas through today. The weather system will also bring some rain relief to Tennessee and Georgia. Areas of these two states have suffered from extremely dry conditions and wildfires in recent weeks.

At least two tornadoes appear to have touched down in Mississippi this morning. One death has been reported in Hebron (Jones County), Miss. There are also some early reports of damage in Collins (pop. 2,500, Covington County).

Another tornado in Jasper County has reportedly injured three people and damaged several structures, including the firehouse in Moss, Miss. Local authorities are responding to these incidents.
