Iowa Tornado Cleanup Underway

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Iowa state officials report cleanup is underway in the wake of severe weather that hit the state recently. Twenty-two counties were affected by the system last week that spawned several confirmed tornadoes.
On April 9, the governor declared state of emergency for Adair and Union counties and deployed state damage assessment teams to the two counties. On April 13, the state's emergency declaration was expanded to include Adams and Taylor counties.
The State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the State Department of Transportation are conducting debris removal operations. State officials anticipated debris removal would be completed in Union County yesterday. The DNR has also provided security personnel at Union County traffic access areas.
FEMA's regional office in Kansas City, Mo. (Region VII) is monitoring the situation and remains in contact with Iowa state officials.
