Tennessee Receives Fire Suppression Assistance

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Governor of Tennessee's request for federal fire suppression assistance was approved for the "Cagle Mountain Complex Fire." The fire currently includes Grundy, Marion and Sequatchie counties. Federal assistance will help prevent damage to property and threat to lives from the ongoing wildfires in the central and eastern area of the state.
Tennessee state officials report 100 wildfires have burned more than 6,000 acres since last Saturday. Several structures are reported destroyed and more are threatened. There have been some evacuations.
Fires continue to burn in 10 counties including Bledsoe, Cocke, Coffee, Grundy, Hamilton, Marion, Monroe, Polk, Sequatchie and Sevier. National Guard personnel and equipment are helping in the firefights.
The National Weather Service does not forecast rain for the region until Thursday. FEMA's regional office in Atlanta (Region IV) is coordinating support assistance with the U.S. Forest Service and Tennessee state officials.
