New York, NY -- The hours of operation for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free disaster registration and Helpline numbers have changed. Effective Dec. 17, both lines are open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

People affected by the World Trade Center attack can apply for assistance by calling 1-800-462-9029 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585). If you have applied to FEMA for assistance, you can update your information or check on the status of your application by calling the Helpline at 1-800-525-0321 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585). All operators have access to translation services, accommodating the many language communities in the New York City area.

The application process is the starting point for a wide range of federal, state and voluntary disaster assistance programs and services, including temporary housing and relocation; unemployment benefits; crisis counseling; low-interest loans for businesses, renters and home owners; legal services issues; mortgage and rental assistance; and more.

In honor of the Christmas and New Year's holidays, the toll-free registration line and Helpline will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25, and on Jan. 1. The lines will resume operation on Wed., Dec. 26 and Wed., Jan. 2, respectively.

The Disaster Assistance Service Centers (DASCs) on 141 Worth St. in lower Manhattan and at Pier 94 at 12th Avenue and 50th Street in midtown will be closed for Christmas on Dec. 23, 24 and 25, and for New Year's on Dec. 30, 31 and Jan. 1. The centers will resume operation on Wed., Dec. 26 and Wed., Jan. 2, respectively.

Visitors to the DASCs can meet one-on-one with program representatives who will evaluate their individual needs, check on the status of their application or update their registration information. The DASCs are staffed by many agencies including FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the New York State Department of Labor, the New York City Human Resources Administration, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and Safe Horizon. The centers can provide professional childcare for applicants during their visits.

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the Pier 94 DASC. The 141 Worth St. DASC is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Both locations are open Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
