Statesboro University's Windows To Be Reinforced Against Windstorms

Release Date: December 17, 2001
Release Number: R4-01-44

Atlanta, GA -- Eight buildings on the campus of Georgia Southern University in Statesboro will receive reinforced window covers that are designed to withstand winds of up to 120 mph.

The $140,394 project-of which more than $105,000, or 75 percent, will come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)-is made possible as a result of funding authorized after tornadoes lashed several Georgia counties in February 2000.

Windows and other openings of the university's eight structures will be reinforced by a film protection that can prevent dangerous flying shards in future severe wind storms. "Building disaster resistant structures often involves taking just a small step to reap a big result," said FEMA Region IV Director Kenneth O. Burris Jr. "This is one of those measures."

The buildings will serve as emergency shelters and shelter support facilities in the event of such storms.

"This wind retrofit grant will play a vital role in helping Georgia Southern University maintain critical operations capabilities during severe weather events," said Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) Director Gary McConnell.
