FEMA's Disaster Information Helpline Available to Those Affected by Recent Severe Storms, Tornadoes and Flooding

Jackson, MS -- A toll-free Disaster Information Helpline, 1-800-621-3362 (1-800-462-7585 for the hearing impaired), has been established for those who were affected by the recent tornadoes, flooding and severe storms and who have already registered for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The Helpline provides a means for applicants to maintain up-to-date registration information (correct address, phone numbers, etc.), to ask questions about what assistance programs are available or to inquire about the status of an application.
Leon Shaifer, the state coordinating officer for the disaster recovery effort, reminded residents that, "FEMA has made it easier to get assistance by consolidating the registration Hotline and the assistance Helpline into one phone number, 1-800-621-3362."
Representatives from FEMA and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) are encouraging anyone located in Bolivar, DeSoto, Hinds, Humphreys, Madison, Panola, Quitman, Sunflower, Tate and Washington counties who sustained uninsured or underinsured damage resulting from the November 24 through December 17, 2001 severe storms, tornadoes and flooding not to delay in registering for assistance.
Gracia Szczech, the FEMA official in charge of long-term recovery, said, "Those who have already registered with FEMA should use the Helpline to update their application information such as changes in address or phone number, find rental resources, or to get additional information about the status of their application. If the Helpline is unable to answer a particular question, you will be referred to the appropriate agency or organization."
