Restoration in Oglala continues two years after a tornado lashed the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota killing one man and leaving many others homeless.
The South Dakota Department of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service with the help of Agriculture Department at South Dakota State University in Brookings planted another 100 trees in the community. Students from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, provide labor. They came to the area to help landscape Our Lady of the Sioux Catholic Church, which was damaged by the tornado.
Trees were also planted around the Oglala Recreation Center. The next and final planned planting is scheduled for June 14. Organizers hope for a large community turnout to help plan cottonwood trees. The cost of the project is $15,000 and paid for by federal grants. When the projects are completed, between 220 and 240 aspen, ash, bur oak, cottonwood and juniper will be planted in Oglala.
